Hi all,

We have an HP (desktop) with Win98SE pre-installed, with a master CD for
system recovery if needed.

Now, we'd like to make an update to WinXP but we're not sure that WinXP will
be able to check the Windows98 licence from the master CD.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance,
T.

Well if you're using an update CD of WinXP, all it looks for is the
existence of a previous version of Windows on your hard drive. This is
fine if you don't want to format your hard drive and upgrade to XP, but
ideally it's best to format your drive and start fresh using the NTFS
file system on your drive. Now here's the rub, if you format the drive
you'll then need a install CD of a previous version of Windows, such as
Win95, 98, ME, or 2000. The system restore disks that HP provide don't
fit into that category... now if you happen to have a friend with a
older Windows disk.... ;-)
