Hi, I just got a JetDirect box to hook up my printer HP4v to my home
network - how do I let the computers know it is on the network ....i've
downloaded software (HP download manager) from hp.com - but when i run the
softwware ...it doesn't find anything ....i have three computers at home
connected to a home network ...they were easy to connect ...but this box is
strange to me because it is not a computer ...so i don't know how to
approach it...

There are two different pieces of software that you need for your
JetDirect.

The first is a program called JetAdmin. Do a search for it on the HP web
site,
or on a site such as Google. This program will allow you to configure the
JetDirect. On a small network such as yours, most of the configuration won't
be needed.

I think JetAdmin is officially discontinued by HP, so you may have to
download it from somewhere besides the HP web site.

The second program is called the "HP Install Network Printer Wizard". This
is current software, and available on the HP web site. Install this on your
computers. They can use it to find and automatically set up a connection to
a JetDirect.

...and would I need the same programs for connecting a HP IIID (with a
built-in network card) to the network

The internal network card is a JetDirect as well. To the software it is
the
same as an external box.

An internal JetDirect old enough for a HP IIID may have other issues
though. It may not support TCPIP, only IPX, for one thing. This will depend
on exactly what model it is.

Try searching the HP web site for software for your exact model. That
may include details on what it can and can't do.
