i am trying to upgrade a Pavilion a330n to XP Pro. it currently has XP home.
instead of wiping out the HD, i added a new one in which to put the new os
on.

after installing the XP on the new master HD, i loaded the restore disk to
install the necessary drivers. to my surprise, there were no options to load
drivers. just standard restore which wiped out the XP Pro and replaced it
with XP home.

is there a way to extract the system drivers from the restore disk so i can
keep XP Pro intact?
i really would hate to manually pick out the driver files from the original
HD.

the motherboard has integrated peripherals that are needed to be functional.

How about loading the Home version first and then doing an 'upgrade'
to WinXP Pro. Thats what I did with my Pavilion and I didn't have any
problems at all.

How far into the install routine does it get before it stalls. I had
that happen once when I first tried it and it ended up being my
network card that was causing the problem. Removed the NIC and tried
it again no problems. Once it was up and and running, I just simply
put the NIC back in andaway I went.

after the XP pro finished installation and rebooted, it goes black just
after the XP loading.
I finally found all the drivers I needed on the manufacturers web (took
about 3 hours of web searching)
(the NIC is integrated into the motherboard, as with video and sound).

now for another question, when I eventually add a real video card, sound
card, extra HD, more mem, and possibly a processor upgrade will that affect
re-activating XP pro (activation code) when I do another clean reformat. I
heard the original XP pro key will invalidate thinking it's a new pc.

Which "manufacturers web"? HP's or the sites of the manufacturers of
the individual components?

Anyway, a little after the fact, but perhaps useful for the future:

I have no experience with HP's Pavilion's, let alone this one (a330n)
but for HP's notebooks, at least the OmniBook ones, there normally is a
special directory which contains al the original copies (i.e. not the
installed copies) of all the system-specific drivers. For example for my
OmniBook 6200 it is "C:\HP". This directory has clear subdirectories
like DRIVERS, LIBRARY, PROGRAMS, etc. and most (all?) directories
contain .TXT files (mostly README.TXT) given details about the stuff in
that directory.

I hope this helps.

HP site only had specs and driver/bios updates.
i went to the motherboards site (asus) for the drivers and the cd/dvd
manufacturers site for the latest bios updates.
i copied the c:\hp\drivers hidden folder, but it wouldn't install the
drivers correctly (i still had the yellow question marks in device manager).
the motherboard's exact model number wasn't visible inside the case, so i
had to read the specs on asus's site to find the correct match.
