Cannot change node name in HP Openview NNM
(too old to reply)

We removed a Cisco RSM module and replaced it with a MSFC card in
another switch. The RSM IP address was transfered to the MSFC card.

Problem is that the old name of the RSM refuses to go. I've tried
deleting the node/rediscovering and demand polling but to no avail.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

I've definitely seen this. I can't even figure out where this
stuff gets squirrelled away. However, if you use a symphony of
sledgehammers you might just get rid of it:

1) delete anything vaguely related to the name or IP from every
map and submap
2) shut down netmon
3) Do the colonic steps:
3a) backup everything
3b)/opt/OV/bin/ovw -mapcount -ruD
3c)/opt/OV/bin/ovtopofix -csh
3d)/opt/OV/bin/ovtopofix -u
3e)/opt/OV/bin/xnmsnmpconf -clearC
4) shutdown OV (ovstop)
5) clear any OS level references to the IP and name
5a) check /etc/hosts
5b) Solaris: nscd -i hosts ; other OSes have similar gizmos
6) Update reverse DNS with correct name
7) update DNS with correct name
8) update /etc/hosts with correct name
9) update actual so that SNMP returns correct name
10) start OV
11) loadhost with the new name

After all that you might get the result you want.
Or then again maybe not. I've got a lot of host123.isp.reverse.net
names left around despite my attempts. I've also got duplicate IP
errors that won't go away and about three or four times a day, a
router in my network will magically split into two and then merge
back into one.
