swinstall does not list certain apps from HPUX 10.20 Application CDs.
I.e. Netscape or wabi cannot be installed. I also tried to uncompress
the install packages manually, but the format is incompatible with
gzip, compress, pack, or compact.
Is the mentioned sw protected? How does the normal install process
with payware work? Should they appear in the swinstall window?

Apps which are codeword-protected would not show up in swinstall. The
files themselves are encrypted. Also, with 10.20, there was a distinction
between "server" (s800) and "workstation" (s700). Make sure you have the
correct CD's.

Netscape 4.75 is avail for free from software.hp.com:

https://payment.ecommerce.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/try.pl?productNumber=B8342AA&date=

or get 4.78 from ftp.netscape.com:

Hi Chuck,
thank you for your reply, it was enlightening.
I hope that the Application CDs are compatible with the OS
(B.10.20.55.3) installed on my 712/80 workstation. They are
labelled HP9000 Series 7xx B-, C- & J Class,
P/N B3782-10158/9 (March 1997).

It is a pity, however, that I'd have to download megabytes
of SW with a slow modem connect, although code is 'already
there' on CD. I also prefer Netscape 3 to later versions,
as older SW is generally less "fat" than recent versions.
It would be interesting if Netscape (or HP?) would still
offer NS3 http-client for SALE (and provide codewords). I
suspect they'd call it "out of marketing". The same with wabi:
I'd simply like to have a glance at it to see how it performs.

The Lighthouse Application Suite on NextStep was offered
freely, i.e. codewords were provided without charge, after
the product had been withdrawn from market.
Are similar offers available for HP-UX Application SW?
Torsten
